Striking For MMA Formula
by pittsburghmma

MMA Striking Is Not One-Size-Fits-All

Learning the Striking game in MMA requires a formula that blends together solid technique along with the attributes of each individual fighter. Body style, stance and tendencies are just some of the things that each person can use to their benefit when it comes to learning and employing an MMA striking game plan thats tailored to THEM.

When it comes to MMA Striking I hope everyone remembers that Technique > Aggression… Leave the haymaking to farmers.

If you want tangible results, then follow an MMA Striking Game Plan that works.

Training MMA To Get Better At Football?
by pittsburghmma

I wanted to share with you a clip from an article I read recently on Fox Sports…

“In 2006, defensive end Jared Allen had a perfectly fine season for the Kansas City Chiefs: 65 tackles, 7.5 sacks. The former fourth-round pick out of Idaho State had become a very good defensive lineman, but not nearly a Pro Bowler.
Allen got to talking with Jay Glazer, the FOX Sports NFL insider and mixed martial arts fanatic and trainer. Perhaps, the two wondered, training in mixed martial arts in the off season could improve Allen’s performance on the gridiron. So they tried it. The off season results were astounding. Allen added muscle and flexibility while shedding 25 pounds from his 6-foot-6 frame. He opened up his hips to improve mobility and got his hands flying to better avoid blockers and get to the quarterback.
When he came back for his contract year, Allen added eight sacks to his previous year’s total, leading the NFL with 15.5. He made his first Pro Bowl, which he’d eventually do three years in a row, and he signed the then-largest contract in NFL history for a defensive lineman, getting $73 million over six years with the Minnesota Vikings…” Article by Reid Forgrave read full article here.

Were you surprised by reading that? I wasn’t. My only surprise is that its taken this long for professional athletes to realize the massive gains in functional fitness that one develops through MMA training. This stuff is for REAL!

Stand-up Training in MMA: Not Optional
by pittsburghmma

The great thing about the Pittsburgh Area is we have solid wrestling programs all over the place. Pennsylvania has a tradition of creating world class wrestlers. For MMA, Pittsburgh is the perfect place to develop talented new fighters…but heres the catch. They throw punches and kicks in MMA…which are never trained in the wrestling room (*officially, haha)

The skill level of new up and coming MMA fighters is getting better every year. Having solid ground game is one thing (this includes your ability to defend against and apply submissions) but stand-up striking is a completely different animal and must be trained thoroughly. Take the same focus and drive you used in hours of grueling wrestling practices…and apply them to developing your boxing or kickboxing game. That’s when you’ll see serious gains in your MMA training which will pay off huge dividends when that cage door closes.

At Pennsylvania Combat Sports, the members training in the MMA 101 Program are taught Kickboxing by Coach Alex “The Lumberjack” Beck. His european style of Kickboxing is devastating for MMA purposes as it incorporates way more boxing than traditional Muay Thai.

Heres a short clip from one of Coach Alex’s Kickboxing 101 classes (these classes are great for both MMA and Kickboxing fighters to develop the core fundamentals)
